Effects The active hallucinogenic agents are 5-etoxi-N, N-dimetilpritmamine and other triptamines, all powerful hallucinogens.
This Virola variety is also used as an ayahuasca admixture, because of its large amounts of tryptamines. Exacts amounts and therefore dosage suggestions are yet unknown.
Effects and side-effects are varied depending on the species used, dosage, and concentration of the drug. Generally, it brings on an initial excitability, followed by numbness and tingling in various parts of the body, loss of somatic co-ordination, nausea, visual hallucinations, and finally a deep sleep.
Usage V. surinamensis is popularly used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, stomach aches due to gases, and dyspepsia (Rodriguez 1975). Lucent (1947) reports that cooked bark is used to sterilize wounds and aid healing. Its sap, mixed with camupu (Physalis sp) extract, is used to treat hemorrhoids (Rodriguez 1975).
Virola was traditionally boiled down into a thick paste and then dried and eaten or snorted as powder.
